The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the appointment of Saadia Zahidi as its next Director General, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the global aviation organization in its nearly 80-year history. Zahidi will officially assume office on 1 November 2026, succeeding Willie Walsh, who has served as Director General since 2021 and will conclude his tenure at the end of October.
Currently serving as the Managing Director at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Zahidi brings more than two decades of international leadership experience spanning economic development, public policy, global partnerships, and business transformation. Throughout her career, she has worked extensively with governments, multinational corporations, and international organizations on issues related to economic growth, workforce development, innovation, and sustainability.
IATA’s Board of Governors expressed confidence that Zahidi’s broad global perspective and strategic leadership will help the association navigate the rapidly evolving aviation landscape. The industry continues to face significant challenges and opportunities, including the transition toward net-zero emissions, digital transformation, resilient supply chains, workforce development, and the increasing demand for sustainable and efficient air connectivity.
Commenting on her appointment, Zahidi said she is honoured to lead an organization that plays a vital role in connecting people, businesses, and economies across the world. She emphasized the importance of collaboration across the aviation ecosystem to build a safer, more sustainable, and inclusive future for global air transport.
Outgoing Director General Willie Walsh welcomed the appointment and expressed confidence in Zahidi’s ability to lead IATA into its next chapter. Under his leadership, IATA guided the aviation industry through the post-pandemic recovery while advancing initiatives focused on sustainability, operational efficiency, and industry resilience.
Representing nearly 350 airlines that account for around 80% of global air traffic, IATA remains the leading voice of the international aviation industry. Zahidi’s appointment is expected to strengthen the association’s efforts in driving innovation, policy collaboration, and sustainable growth while reflecting the increasing diversity of leadership within the global aviation sector.
