Arunachal Pradesh has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the Subansiri Lower Pondage into a world-class mountain-and-river immersive tourism hub, aiming to position the state as a premier tourism destination in India. The project will integrate eco-tourism, adventure activities, cultural experiences, and sustainable livelihood opportunities, creating a holistic tourism ecosystem rooted in the region’s natural and cultural strengths.

The proposed development is centred around the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest hydropower project in India, located on the Subansiri River. The project is expected to be fully commissioned by December 2026, with four units already operational. Authorities see the pondage created by the project as a unique opportunity to build a high-value tourism ecosystem within one of the country’s most biodiverse river corridors.

The initiative aims not only to boost tourism but also to drive inclusive economic development, with projections indicating the creation of over 2,500 jobs annually, particularly benefiting local communities and youth. The plan also targets attracting more than 1.5 lakh tourists annually in the medium term, further strengthening the state’s tourism economy.

The tourism model will incorporate a wide range of experiences, including nature-based tourism, water sports, cultural and heritage tourism, inland fisheries, and even luxury river-based activities. It draws inspiration from globally renowned destinations such as Lake Como in Italy, Milford Sound in New Zealand, and Phewa Lake in Nepal, reflecting Arunachal Pradesh’s aspiration to develop a globally competitive destination.

To ensure sustainable and integrated development, the state government has sought support and collaboration from the central government and key ministries, emphasising a whole-of-government approach. Local and tribal communities are expected to play a central role as primary stakeholders and custodians of the region’s ecological and cultural heritage.

Overall, the Subansiri Lower Pondage tourism hub represents a strategic move to leverage infrastructure, natural assets, and cultural richness, positioning Arunachal Pradesh as a high-value, sustainable tourism destination in India’s Northeast.
