Abu Dhabi has announced plans to develop Sphere Abu Dhabi, a landmark USD 1.7 billion immersive entertainment venue on Yas Island, marking the first Sphere destination outside the United States. The mega project is being developed through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co., further strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global tourism, entertainment, and cultural hub.
The venue will be constructed between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, surrounded by Yas Island’s expanding hospitality and entertainment ecosystem. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2029. Inspired by the globally recognised Sphere venue in Las Vegas, the Abu Dhabi edition will feature advanced immersive technologies, a giant LED “Exosphere,” and a flexible capacity of up to 20,000 visitors depending on event configurations.
According to DCT Abu Dhabi, Sphere Abu Dhabi will host three major categories of events, immersive Sphere Experiences featuring multi-sensory storytelling, global concert residencies, and large-scale marquee events including combat sports, conferences, product launches, and brand showcases. The project is also expected to become a major MICE and business events attraction in the Middle East.
HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, stated that the investment reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision for tourism, culture, and economic diversification. He emphasised that the venue will also serve as a platform to showcase Emirati culture, heritage, talent, and storytelling on a global scale. Meanwhile, James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment Co., described Abu Dhabi as a natural location for the company’s first international expansion due to its infrastructure, ambition, and position as a cultural crossroads.
The project will integrate closely with Yas Island’s existing attractions, including Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The venue is expected to significantly boost tourism, global events, hospitality demand, and job creation in the emirate. Industry experts believe Sphere Abu Dhabi could redefine experiential entertainment and further position Yas Island among the world’s most dynamic entertainment destinations.
