Nigeria’s state-owned carrier Ibom Air is set to expand its international footprint with new routes to Douala (Cameroon), São Tomé (São Tomé and Príncipe), and Ghana, marking a significant step in strengthening regional aviation connectivity and tourism across West and Central Africa.
The expansion is part of the airline’s broader strategy to enhance intra-African connectivity, linking key economic and tourism hubs while reducing dependence on non-African transit routes. The new destinations are strategically selected to improve accessibility between Nigeria and Central Africa, supporting both leisure and business travel.
Currently operating primarily within Nigeria and with an existing international route to Accra, Ghana, Ibom Air’s expansion reflects growing demand for seamless regional travel. The airline’s hub at Uyo (Victor Attah International Airport) is being positioned as a key gateway for international operations, further strengthening Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
The introduction of routes to Douala, a major commercial centre in Cameroon, and São Tomé, known for its tourism appeal and natural landscapes, is expected to drive multi-destination travel opportunities. These destinations offer a mix of cultural, business, and leisure experiences, making them attractive for a wide range of travellers.
The expansion is set to play a crucial role in facilitating business travel, trade exchanges, and regional collaboration, supporting Africa’s broader integration goals under initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The airline’s modern fleet, including CRJ900 and Airbus A220-300 aircraft, is well-suited for these regional routes, offering efficiency and comfort for short- to medium-haul travel.
