In a significant development for Malaysia’s business events industry, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has achieved ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System certification, becoming the first purpose-built venue in the country to earn this recognition.
The ISO 20121 certification is an internationally recognised standard designed for the global events industry, offering a structured framework for managing events with measurable sustainability outcomes. The standard covers key areas such as resource efficiency, waste management, responsible sourcing, and operational governance.
According to the Centre, the certification reflects its ongoing commitment to integrating sustainable practices across all aspects of event delivery. The recognition is also expected to strengthen Malaysia’s positioning as a responsible and forward-looking business events destination.
John Burke, General Manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, stated that the certification marks an important milestone for both the venue and the broader industry, highlighting the growing importance of sustainability in event planning and execution.
The achievement builds on the Centre’s existing sustainability credentials, including the PM Hibiscus Award for Sustainable Convention and Exhibition Centres. It also aligns with global efforts to promote environmentally and socially responsible event practices.
For event organisers, ISO 20121 certification provides assurance that events hosted at the venue adhere to defined sustainability frameworks with measurable impact. Delegates, in turn, benefit from participating in events that prioritise responsible environmental and social practices.
The certification was formally presented by BSI Malaysia, marking another step in the Centre’s sustainability journey.
The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre continues to hold multiple international certifications across quality, environmental management, food safety, occupational health, and anti-bribery systems, reinforcing its position as one of the region’s leading convention and exhibition venues.
