India is set to begin issuing chip-enabled electronic passports nationwide starting in May 2025, marking a significant step toward modernizing its travel documentation system. The introduction of these e-passports is expected to streamline immigration processes and strengthen document security for Indian travelers.
The new passports will contain embedded electronic chips that store encrypted biometric data, including the holder’s photograph and personal details. This upgrade aligns with international travel standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and aims to facilitate faster identity verification at border checkpoints.
According to officials, the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance travel convenience while reducing instances of passport forgery and identity fraud. The inclusion of biometric features is expected to allow for quicker processing times at both domestic and international airports, benefiting millions of Indian passport holders.
The rollout will take place in phases through existing passport service centers and regional offices across the country. Authorities have indicated that the transition will initially focus on new passport applicants and those seeking renewals, while existing passport holders will continue to use their current documents until their expiration.
In addition to improving security and efficiency, the e-passport project also reflects India’s increasing adoption of digital solutions in public services. The government has emphasized the importance of data protection and has stated that the chip and biometric systems comply with global data privacy standards.
The move follows earlier pilot projects and limited issuance of e-passports to diplomats and officials, which served as a testbed for nationwide implementation. As of May, the technology will be made available to the general public, with the goal of covering all passport holders over time.
Authorities will monitor the initial rollout to address any technical challenges and ensure smooth integration with immigration systems in India and abroad.
