Noida International Airport (NIA) has officially commenced commercial flight operations, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation journey and creating a new air gateway for the National Capital Region (NCR) and Western Uttar Pradesh. The airport welcomed its first passengers, with IndiGo becoming the first airline to operate from the facility.
The inaugural IndiGo flight arrived from Lucknow, while the airport’s first outbound commercial service departed for Bengaluru, signalling the beginning of regular passenger operations. The launch follows the airport’s inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28, 2026, after which extensive Operational Readiness, Activation and Transition (ORAT) trials were conducted to ensure that systems, infrastructure and operational teams were fully prepared.
NIA will initially focus on domestic services, with international operations expected to commence in the coming months. Passengers travelling through the airport will have access to multiple onward connectivity options, including airport taxis, app-based cab services and dedicated bus networks linking Delhi NCR with major cities across North India.
Beyond passenger services, the airport has also launched a dedicated cargo terminal developed by Air India SATS (AISATS). The facility has an initial annual handling capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes, with plans to expand this to 1.5 million tonnes in the future. Incorporating the IATA-recommended E-Freight system, the terminal enables paperless cargo movement, live shipment tracking and streamlined documentation processes.
Commenting on the launch, Christoph Schnellmann, Vice Chairman, Noida International Airport, said, “Today is a proud moment for everyone who has contributed to making Noida International Airport a reality. We are delighted to welcome our first passengers and flight operations. From the outset, our focus has been on creating an airport that combines operational excellence with an outstanding customer experience.”
Designed as a digitally enabled airport, NIA offers DigiYatra-enabled travel, self-service check-in and baggage drop facilities, alongside a curated mix of retail and dining experiences. Its architecture reflects the cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh, drawing inspiration from the ghats of Varanasi and traditional Indian haveli design elements.
Phase 1 of the airport has been designed to accommodate 12 million passengers annually. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, digital innovation, customer experience and operational efficiency, Noida International Airport is poised to play a transformative role in enhancing regional connectivity, supporting tourism and trade, and driving economic growth across Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh and northern India.
