Thailand and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are set to deepen tourism and economic cooperation following high-level discussions focused on tourism promotion, direct international flight connectivity, and sustainable development initiatives. The meeting was held at Lok Niwas in Sri Vijaya Puram between Thailand’s Consul General Siriporn Tantipanyathep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor Admiral D K Joshi (Retd.).
The Thai delegation, which also included Chek Jeenaphan, explored several areas of collaboration, including tourism, fisheries, trade, hospitality investments, and enhanced regional connectivity. One of the major highlights of the discussion was the proposal to establish direct overseas flight connections between Thailand and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The initiative is expected to significantly improve accessibility, encourage greater tourist movement, and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two destinations.
Officials from both sides highlighted the strong potential for developing premium and experience-driven tourism segments such as wellness tourism, luxury resorts, destination weddings, eco-tourism, and adventure travel. With Thailand already established as a leading global tourism destination and the Andaman Islands emerging as one of India’s most scenic island destinations, the proposed collaboration could create new opportunities for international travellers seeking integrated island tourism experiences.
The discussions also aligned with the Government of India’s Holistic Development of Islands (HDI) initiative, which aims to position the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as a globally competitive tourism hub while maintaining environmental sustainability. Authorities emphasised the importance of responsible infrastructure development, renewable energy adoption, and eco-friendly tourism practices to protect the islands’ fragile ecosystem.
Officials noted that sustainable tourism and improved connectivity could play a crucial role in accelerating economic growth and attracting global investments to the region. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing interest in strengthening bilateral engagement and exploring long-term partnerships across tourism and allied sectors.
Further discussions and collaborative initiatives are expected in the coming months as both destinations work towards enhancing tourism exchanges and regional cooperation.
