India’s aviation sector is set to enter a new phase of regional connectivity as SkyHop Aviation receives its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), clearing the way for the launch of commercial seaplane operations. The approval marks a major milestone for the Gurugram-based airline, positioning it as India’s first dedicated commercial seaplane operator.

The certification follows a series of successful test flights conducted in April 2026, including water take-offs and landings at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh and Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand. These trials demonstrated the operational viability of seaplane services in Indian conditions and were a key step in securing regulatory clearance.

SkyHop Aviation aims to address connectivity challenges in regions where conventional airport infrastructure is limited or difficult to develop. By enabling aircraft to take off and land on water, the airline plans to unlock new routes, reduce travel time, and improve access to remote and underserved destinations.

In its initial phase, the company plans to deploy 19-seater aircraft to connect five islands in Lakshadweep with each other and with the mainland. The airline is also evaluating additional routes across the country where seaplane services can provide efficient connectivity solutions.

Avani Singh, Founder and CEO of SkyHop Aviation, described the DGCA approval as a significant milestone achieved after sustained efforts. She emphasised that the certification provides a strong regulatory foundation for launching operations and reflects the company’s commitment to redefining regional travel in India.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader push to enhance last-mile connectivity and boost tourism, particularly in coastal, island, and inland water regions. Seaplane services are expected to open new tourism circuits and provide faster, more flexible travel options, contributing to economic growth and regional development.

With regulatory approval now in place, SkyHop Aviation is preparing to commence operations, marking the beginning of a new chapter in India’s aviation and tourism landscape.
