India’s tourism industry is poised for significant growth, with its value expected to more than double to USD 523 billion over the next decade, according to World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) President and CEO Julia Simpson. The WTTC, a global authority on the economic and social impact of travel and tourism, works closely with governments to support the sector.

In a recent interview with PTI, Simpson stated that the Indian travel and tourism sector currently stands at USD 256 billion and employs approximately 45 million people. By 2035, the industry is projected to support 63 million jobs, highlighting its role as a major employment generator in the country.

“Tourism represents about seven per cent of the Indian economy,” Simpson noted, adding that in 2019, the sector was valued at USD 211 billion. Despite global challenges, India has shown strong recovery and growth in tourism post-pandemic.

Praising India’s allure as a destination, Simpson said, “India is one of the most beautiful and amazing countries in the world. Tourists have been drawn to its rich culture, history, and vibrant cities for centuries.” She also highlighted the warmth of Indian hospitality, which continues to attract global visitors.

India’s increasing global visibility, improving infrastructure, and policy support are contributing to the sector’s rapid expansion. As travel demand rises, the tourism industry is expected to become an even more vital part of India’s economic and social fabric in the coming years.

With this optimistic outlook, India is set to strengthen its position as a global tourism hub, providing millions of new jobs and driving sustainable economic growth through its thriving travel and tourism sector.
