The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has advised Indian nationals not to use Malaysia’s 30-day visa-free entry facility to seek employment, following a reported increase in cases involving Indians travelling to the country with the intention of finding work.

In an advisory issued on September 22, 2026, the High Commission cautioned that some Indian nationals are being misled by unscrupulous agents offering false or misleading employment opportunities in Malaysia. Such arrangements can expose individuals to immigration violations and other legal and personal risks.

The advisory makes clear that the visa-free facility for Indian passport holders is intended for short-term visits, including tourism and social visits, and should not be used to take up employment. Individuals seeking to work in Malaysia are required to follow the appropriate employment and immigration procedures.

The High Commission has also highlighted the risks associated with illegal employment. Its existing guidance for Indian workers states that working in Malaysia without the required authorisation can lead to arrest, detention and financial penalties. It advises prospective workers to travel only with the necessary passport, valid employment visa and employment contract.

The latest warning also comes amid concerns over individuals being attracted by fraudulent job offers and subsequently finding themselves in difficult immigration or employment situations.

The High Commission has urged Indian nationals to exercise caution when approached with overseas employment offers and to verify the legitimacy of employers, recruitment arrangements and required documentation before travelling.

The advisory serves as a reminder that visa-free tourist entry does not constitute work authorisation, and prospective employees should obtain the appropriate permission before travelling to Malaysia for employment.
