The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled “Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries”, a global safety initiative designed to help passengers manage mobile phones, laptops, power banks, and other lithium-powered devices securely during flights. The campaign will be available on IATA’s digital platforms and social channels, with adaptable resources for airlines, airports, and stakeholders across the travel and MICE ecosystem.

“Lithium-powered devices are safe when used correctly, but mishandling or improper packing can create serious risks. With the growing reliance on these devices, our campaign equips travelers with clear guidance to reduce hazards and travel confidently,” said Nick Careen, Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security at IATA.

Research by IATA indicates that air travelers increasingly carry multiple lithium-powered devices, with 83% bringing a mobile phone, 60% a laptop, and 44% a power bank. Yet, knowledge gaps remain, as many passengers are unaware of correct handling practices. Misconceptions include packing small batteries or power banks in checked baggage and assuming there are no restrictions on battery capacities, highlighting the need for clearer communication.

The initiative emphasizes practical safety practices, including keeping all lithium-powered items in hand baggage, monitoring devices for signs of overheating or damage, protecting spare batteries to prevent short-circuits, and confirming airline-specific regulations for larger or high-capacity batteries. The campaign also provides guidance for situations such as gate – checking carry – on bags, ensuring all devices and batteries are removed before loading.

Delivered through multilingual digital content, the campaign ensures consistent messaging across the aviation industry. A short, animated video makes the rules simple, engaging, and memorable for travelers, while white-label materials allow airlines and airports to reinforce safety protocols seamlessly.
