Srinagar International Airport will suspend all flight operations for a 15-day period from October 1 to October 15, 2026, to facilitate crucial runway maintenance and repair works, a move that is expected to significantly impact air connectivity to Kashmir during one of its busiest tourism periods.
According to airport authorities, the closure is part of a phased maintenance programme aimed at ensuring operational safety and maintaining aviation standards. Ahead of the complete shutdown, flight operations will face periodic disruptions beginning in July. The runway is proposed to remain unavailable every Monday and Tuesday from July 1 to September 30, 2026, while airport watch hours are expected to be restricted between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM during the maintenance period.
The planned closure comes at a time when Kashmir’s tourism sector is witnessing a strong revival. Srinagar Airport has been handling substantial passenger traffic, reflecting the growing influx of domestic and international visitors to the Valley. Tourism stakeholders have expressed concern that the suspension of flights during October, which coincides with the peak autumn travel season and the Durga Puja holidays, could adversely affect tourist arrivals and lead to booking cancellations.
Airport officials stated that restrictions on flight operations have already been in place since April 6, 2026, following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Indian Air Force. While the airport previously handled between 25 and 30 daily flights, current operations have been reduced, with a limited number of landings permitted during the restricted operational window.
Industry representatives have warned that the temporary suspension may impact tour operators, hoteliers, transport providers, and other businesses dependent on tourism. However, authorities have emphasised that the runway repairs are essential to ensure long-term operational efficiency, safety, and infrastructure reliability at the airport.
Passengers planning travel to or from Kashmir during the affected period have been advised to closely monitor updates from airlines and airport authorities regarding schedules, cancellations, and alternative travel arrangements.
