Ayia Napa, one of Cyprus’ most popular tourist destinations, is taking proactive steps to safeguard its tourism industry as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raise concerns across the global travel sector. Local authorities are emphasizing stability, strategic planning, and support for businesses and workers as the resort city prepares for the upcoming 2026 tourism season.
Mayor Christos Zannetou recently reassured residents and industry stakeholders that Ayia Napa remains a safe and reliable destination despite regional uncertainties. Following a briefing with officials from the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, the mayor confirmed that the situation on the island remains stable and under control. Authorities stressed that daily life continues normally and there is no immediate threat to visitors or residents.
Zannetou acknowledged that developments in the Middle East have created understandable concern in the international tourism market. However, he emphasized that with proper planning, cooperation, and responsible communication, Ayia Napa’s tourism sector can maintain its strong momentum. He also highlighted the importance of protecting jobs and ensuring the sustainability of local tourism businesses, which form a crucial pillar of the region’s economy.
Tourism plays a vital role in Cyprus’ economic growth. The island welcomed more than 4.04 million international visitors in 2024, generating approximately €3.21 billion in tourism revenue, reflecting a 7.3% increase compared with 2023. Among these visitors, around 15.9% stayed in Ayia Napa, making it one of the country’s leading tourist destinations.
Early indicators for 2026 remain positive despite regional uncertainties. Tourist arrivals to Cyprus reached 121,625 in January 2026, marking an 8.5% increase compared with January 2025, demonstrating continued demand for the island as a holiday destination.
With coordinated planning, close monitoring of regional developments, and ongoing support for tourism operators and workers, Ayia Napa aims to maintain confidence among international travelers and ensure a resilient and successful tourism season ahead.
